NCBL STATEMENT: Trump Administration's Assault on Civil and Human Rights
NCBL STATEMENT: Trump Administration's Assault on Civil and Human Rights
National Conference of Black Lawyers (NCBL), following its mission to serve as the legal arm of the Movement for Black Liberation, joins with other organizations in the United States and around the world in a call to condemn, resist, and defeat the Trump Administration’s assaults on the human rights and civil liberties of Black and Brown people, communities of color, and other marginalized groups.

In the more than 300 executive orders, some of which are patently unconstitutional, the Trump Administration has declared war on birthright citizenship as guaranteed by the 14th Amendment, abandoned the unfulfilled commitment to civil rights born of the resistance to Jim Crow, and targeted the mostly Black and Brown immigrants who come to the  United States seeking what other immigrants have been freely given - freedom from the strife of war, political oppression and economic injustice.

In this stunning display of executive overreach, the Trump Administration attacks the undeniably modest goals of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) and has launched a cruel and inhumane assault on programs such as Medicaid and Social Security that created a safety net for the poor, elderly and the differently abled, thrusting them into fear and uncertainty.

The Trump Administration knows these major cuts to the safety net programs will allow the rich to reap the benefits of undeserved and substantial tax breaks.

NCBL will be vigilant in its review of executive orders and legislative actions that perpetuate the systemic race-based assaults on Black and Brown people who must navigate the headwinds of institutional racism in their struggle for justice in the United States.

NCBL will partner with other organizations, including community-based groups, to develop and implement strategies to protect Black and Brown people, communities of color, and other marginalized groups in the wake of these assaults.

NCBL also recognizes the global impact of the repressive policies of the Trump Administration. In response, NCBL will continue to work with groups that have an international focus, such as the International Association of Democratic Lawyers (IADL)

NCBL will support their work to expose and fight the Trump Administration’s assault on the rights of oppressed people around the world to life, liberty and self-determination, a primary example being Gaza and the Palestinian people.

NCBL urges its members and allies to join in the efforts to expose and defeat these assaults.
Join with community groups engaged in protest activities in your area. Stay informed of proposed legislation and administrative actions that advance this assault.

Let your political representatives know you oppose these policies.

NCBL will provide periodic updates on this critical resistance work.

Stay tuned! Stay engaged!
