REPARATIONS HANDBOOK

The National Conference of Black Lawyers (NCBL) received funding from Liberated Capital in 2023 through the request for proposals sent by Decolonizing Wealth.

NCBL sought to provide groups, including reparations commissions and task forces, with information to respond to the objections, particularly legal objections, to Reparations for Black people of African descent.

After hiring a staff to work with Adjoa A. Aiyetoro, who served as the supervising attorney, the handbook idea developed.  The team saw it as a way to provide guidance on some of the critical issues of organizing to obtain Reparations.

In talking to some members of reparations task forces it was revealed that in addition to a concern about how to develop Reparations proposals that may survive legal attack, members wanted to know more about the history of the Reparations Movement, how to approach eligibility and how the United States Reparations Movement relates to the International Reparations Movement.

The Handbook grew through this community involvement into eight short, substantive sections.

The staff was committed to keeping the sections short because people are often deterred by the number of pages.

Footnotes are included to assist anyone interested in doing further research.
